Background Info:
The International Space Station (ISS) is a joint project between 16 nations, including the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, Brazil, and 11 European countries. This is a picture of the certificate received by the 14 nations who signed an agreement for the station on January 29, 1998 in Washington. (Click here for a larger version). When finished, it is expected that the station will accommodate a crew of up to seven and include five complete pressurized laboratories and attached external sites for research. The first station element was launched in June, 1998, and eventually over 100 parts will be assembled over 46 space flights. The assembly of this 1 million pound station is happening over 250 miles up.
